As in many countries, Finland as well celebrates the May Day (Vappu). Celebrations start today on Wednesday the 30th and continue to 1st of May. One of the biggest May Day traditions in Helsinki is the so called Mantan lakitus (translation: Manta’s capping). Havis Amanda ‘Manta’ is a bronze female statue located at the Market Square in Helsinki. It was sculpted by Ville Vallgren and it is supposed to symbolize the rebirth of Helsinki. This year Manta is being capped by the Student Union of the University of Helsinki who also owns Hostel Domus Academica. For many this event is a “must see” tradition. So, if you happen to be in the city; some and see the washing and capping of Manta by HYY at 5 pm onwards!
