April Fool’s Day

Today is April Fools’ Day. We are not going to fool you, but did you know that when you play a successful April Fools’ Day hoax on somebody, in English you shout “April Fools!” In Finnish the same goes: “Aprillia, syö silliä, juo kuravettä päälle!” Roughly translated it means ”April Fools’ Day, eat herring, drink water from the mud water pond!”

Yeah, sound a bit weird, doesn’t it? We probably started to use the phrase thanks to our neighbors, the Swedes, who say “April, april din dumma sill!” So they are calling the target of the hoax as “stupid herring”.

Anyhow, this is one of the reasons why we love travelling: you get to know different cultures and their curiosities.silli
